Roll-up door safety
Roll-up doors are increasingly used by companies and businesses, but not all of their safety devices have to be the same to comply with applicable regulations, rather they must adapt to the characteristics of each case. Specifically, they are conditioned by the door characteristics, its location, the type of users and the way in which it is activated.
Juan Luis Valls, technical officer with CEPortal (a section of INTEGRA engineering), says that there are four main aspects to be taken into account when determining the security devices to be installed with roll-up doors: the door features, its location, the type of users and the type of activation.
In the first case, he explains that the necessary mechanisms will depend on matters such as “if the door has openings, if it is blind, if it has a specific fall-prevention system, etc.” As for the second aspect, we have to consider if the door is to be installed “in a public or private area, if it is on the façade of a building or inside, and where the control system is located”.
The third aspect is directly related to the users, as it is not the same if people who access the door are previously “trained” to handle it or not. In fourth place, we must bear in mind “the type of activation, which can be by means of a constant press system (also known as “deadman”) by impulse, or by automatic control”.
Measurements
Juan Luis Valls pointed out, during a recent conference organised by CEportal, within the technical conference cycle that they are offering for each type of door, the need to know these aspects in order to determine whether one or two photocells should be installed on a roll-up door; when it is mandatory to install a sensor strip, how to adapt this type of door to prevent the leaf from falling and lifting people or objects, and what other additional measures should be taken due to its location, and for it to comply with CE marking.
