The most effective security measures at industrial parks and logistics centres
Intruder alarms, CCTV, perimeter detection, mobile cameras and drones, along with security guards, are becoming the most effective tools in increasing security at industrial parks and logistics centres. Cameras with artificial vision also monitor vehicle traffic and store information for future investigations or audits, as explained by Joan Matavera, Manager of Accesor and Collaborating Partner with ADSI, the Comprehensive Security Directors Association.
According to Joan Matavera, security at industrial parks and logistics centres can be analysed following three cases: type of architecture, location and activity. In the first case, we must consider perimeter protection, taking into account whether there is a single entrance and exit (the complex may hold critical infrastructures) or if they are open industrial parks with wide areas where it would be easy to hide. As for location, whether they are close to towns and urban centres, or on the outskirts. And regarding the activity of the companies, it is convenient to determine whether they store raw materials, finished products, retail sales, which are attractive and subject to theft.
The ADSI partner explained that “in the industrial parks and logistics centres there are currently the usual hazards of vandalism, sabotage and theft, with or without breaking structures; and night-time intrusions have increased due to the effect of the so-called “parkineo” or “street drinking”. And he highlights that “although these intrusions do not usually lead to thefts, they may cause a feeling of insecurity and cause damage due to dirtiness, breaking urban furnishings or graffiti”.
Another recent criminal activity is “the illegal connection to (tapping) the electricity grid to grow cannabis plants or to “mine” (bitcoin), which requires a large amount of electricity and could affect operations in the other companies”.
Main strategies
For the Accesor Manager, the best strategy for security in industrial parks and in logistics centres is to dissuade or avoid criminal threats. “To this end it is recommended to inform that there are security elements such as intruder alarms, CCTV (closed circuit television), security guards.... and if we have proof of real threats, upgrade the area with protective elements and perimeter detection”.
He explained, “right now we have assistance for the guard rounds in the form of mobile cameras (Go-Pro) or rounds with drones. And cameras with artificial vision are very effective, type CLPRV12-ACR or similar, that enable monitoring vehicle traffic on several lanes with a single piece of equipment, storing the type (truck, car, motorcycle), registration, colour and speed, which can be reviewed for future investigation or audits”.
