Iván García, head of the Juba Specialist Sales Channel, warns in the following interview that our hands are an indispensable tool in many jobs and a very vulnerable part of the body. He also explains that all professional sectors have inherent risks, and the important thing is to identify the most appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). In the first three months of 2024, 9,544 hand injuries, 18,233 finger injuries and 5,590 wrist injuries were registered in Spain.

How important is it to protect our hands when it comes to preventing risk in the workplace?

Our hands are an indispensable tool in many jobs, so they are also a very vulnerable part of the body. As shown by the statistics, in the first three months of 2024, 9,544 hand injuries, 18,233 finger injuries and 5,590 wrist injuries were registered in Spain, according to the data published in the latest Advance from the Ministry of Labour. This data shows that there is still much to be done in hand protection. Managers should assess which risks professionals are exposed to in each of the employment sectors and production phases.

What are the most common risks?

Among the potential risks are cuts, puncture wounds, and abrasions, requiring specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). There also may be exposure to extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, which require other types of protection, or, for example, contact with toxic or corrosive substances, for which very specific protection parameters should be taken into account to select the correct PPE.

What type of accidents can be avoided with the correct protection of our hands?

From cuts to blows due to incorrect use of tools to trapping or crushing by machinery, among the many accidents that can be avoided by choosing the right protective gloves.

Can you give us some more information related to the dangers of handling objects?

The data published by the Ministry of Labour gives us some clues. Among the information provided, it is stated that handling objects caused a total of 34,563 accidents at work between January and March this year, in which the injured worker was mainly picking up an object in their hand, grabbing it or holding it in order to put it on a horizontal plane. This action involves far more accidents (26,858) than others such as pouring liquids (969), putting objects on a vertical plane (2,003) or unscrewing (1,492), for example.

What sectors or areas of employment are most exposed to these occurrences?

All professional sectors have their risks, the important thing is to identify the most appropriate PPE for each activity in order to guarantee the physical health and safety of employees.

There are still some challenges ahead according to the data provided by the Ministry of Labour, which specified that in the first three months of this year, nearly 74,000 occupational accidents were recorded in the service sector, which was the sector most affected by this type of accident, followed by industry with nearly 26,000 and construction, which also stood out with nearly 20,000.
