In 2019 there were 650,602 workplace accidents causing sick leave in Spain, of which 11.9% (77,496) happened on the road. Aware of the importance of these numbers, Álvaro Gómez, Director of the National Observatory for Road Safety, explains that the General Traffic Directorate has produced a new Guide to the Model Plan for a Safe and Sustainable Corporate Mobility, to promote the production of this type of plans by all companies.

According to data from the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy, there were a total of 650,602 workplace accidents causing sick leave in Spain in 2019, of which 77,496 were traffic accidents. These are called occupational traffic accidents (WTA) that represent 11.9% of the total of occupational accidents.

The percentage of WTA regarding workplace accidents increases progressively as the accidents are more serious, meaning that in the case of WTA, minor accidents represent 11.8%, serious accidents are 21.8% and very serious accidents are 32.4%.

Within this context Álvaro Gómez, Director of the National Observatory for Road Safety of the General Traffic Directorate (DGT in Spanish) states that “the full integration of road safety into occupational hazard prevention policies within companies is an essential element to improving occupational accident rates within this specific area”.

Therefore, Gómez says that “the DGT has produced, and is about to publish, a new Guide to the Model Plan for a Safe and Sustainable Corporate Mobility, updating the plan that we had from 2011, with the aim to promote and help in the production of this type of plans by our companies”.
