More Frequent Fires Demand More Resilient Buildings
Efficient urban planning requires sustainable towns and more fire-resilient buildings, says Albert Grau, Director of Tecnifuego’s Passive Section, at the latest edition of the SICUR Forum. This expert says that the increasing scale and frequency of building fires in Spain require better, more resilient construction.
The latest edition of the SICUR 2022 Forum took place during the International Security Exhibition, organised by IFEMA MADRID, from 22nd to 25th February. Albert Grau highlighted the importance of “making residents and all stakeholders more aware of the dynamics and the relationship between sustainability and fire safety.” He added that “we need to encourage informed decision-making and minimise risk as far as possible by being more ambitious than current regulations require.”
Grau also pointed out that “to empower communities, we have to invest in quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure.” And he noted that “green buildings are the paradigm for meeting human needs and persisting and adapting to future challenges.” And he concluded that “a building that is not fire-resilient cannot fulfil its mission for future generations.”
He clarified that “a green building aims to consume and produce resources responsibly, reducing emissions and use of materials, while encouraging recycling and reuse.” Whereas “a building that’s not fire-resilient wastes a lot of materials and reconstructing it will use increasingly scarce finite materials.”
