Asecos' storage cabinets for flammable chemical products and lithium-ion batteries are built using calcium sulphate as an insulating material, which provides unbeatable fire insulation properties, according to Pere Trallero, Managing Director of the company, which will be exhibiting its range of ION-Line cabinets at the next SICUR trade fair.

Pere Trallero, Managing Director of Asecos Seguridad y Protección del Medio Ambiente (Asecos Safety and Environmental Protection), says that occupational risk prevention covers a very wide field of applications depending on the goals to be achieved (personal protective equipment, active or passive protection against fire, chemical compatibility of storage, etc.). But he adds that "the goal of manufacturers concerned about sustainability and the use of resources is to manufacture safer and more reliable products in which the components or manufacturing processes take into account the circular economy".

Trallero mentions two very clear examples related to his company's products. On the one hand, "Asecos' storage cabinets for flammable chemical products and lithium-ion batteries, which must guarantee their fire resistance according to the UNE EN 14470-1 standard, are built using calcium sulphate as an insulating material, which provides unbeatable fire insulation properties; moreover, the manufacture of these calcium sulphate panels includes the use of other recycled materials". Furthermore, "the Asecos manufacturing plant in Gründau is equipped with solar panels on the roof, which enable us to operate in a 'green' self-sufficient manner”.

Lithium-ion batteries

The Asecos manager points out that the massive use of lithium-ion batteries, both in professional and private life, is leading to a new type of risk caused by the large amount of energy that these batteries can store in a small space or volume. "The virulence of fires caused by batteries in poor condition, or connected to unsuitable chargers, leads to the need for new storage and charging systems in which, in addition to the traditional fire protection that prevents the flammable products stored from becoming fuel for the fire, a new factor must be taken into account: that the stored battery itself is what can cause the fire".

Therefore, "the safety cabinet must guarantee sectorisation so that in the event of a fire, it does not spread to the rest of the facilities. All this using sustainable and reusable materials. A challenge that we at Asecos have met with our range of ION-Line cabinets, which we will be exhibiting at the next SICUR trade fair".
