An interview with Lluc Ferrer Aymar, Export and private label manager at Cantabria Labs Stangest
“Spanish brands and products need to cast away their lack of confidence and insecurity and jump headfirst into the international market.”
How long have you been working in the pet sector?
It’s in the family, so my whole life. I have been working in the sector for more than 20 years.
How many times have you exhibited at Iberzoo Propet?
I was at all the sector's first trade fairs. Expoaviga, Sizoo, Iberzoo, Propet and a facilitating founder of Iberzoo Propet, as it is known nowadays.
Name a growing market that you find interesting.
Mexico. I remember a statistic of the ratio of dogs per family, and it is a very high percentage. As the average income per family increases, the potential is enormous.
How would you describe the image of the Spanish brand in the pet care sector?
I would say it is ‘insecure’. It lacks confidence. There is a whole lot of potential, and quality and innovation are on the rise. In Europe, particularly in Latin America, Spanish products are extremely prestigious. We can compete with anything a lot of the time.
What would you ask of dog owners who walk their dogs in the streets?
I would ask them to be responsible and careful with themselves, to begin with, and also with their dogs. They should leave the pavements and parks in the same condition they found them.
And how about town councils?
They should continue to educate, train and raise awareness. Citizen education regarding responsible pet ownership is essential.
Do you think it is necessary to do a course before purchasing a pet?
It’s a good idea, but I don't know how effective it is. We’d have to see how it turns out.
Do you share your life with a pet, or have you had one in the past?
I've always had pets. We have a poodle living with us at the moment.
If you do, how often do you take her to the vet?
At least once a year.
Do you shop for food and accessories in retail establishments, or do you buy them online?
Both retailers and on the internet. They are complementary.
How often?
At least every three months, depending on what we have in the cupboard.
Buy or adopt?
I think they are equally good options. It is up to the individual. I prefer not to judge others.
Do you think medications should be sold in veterinary practices or only in pharmacies?
It is not up to me to say, but if I had to decide, I would say it should be done transparently and equally for everyone.
Should pet shops be allowed to sell all types of pets, including cats and dogs?
I think that’s the wrong question. It isn’t a question of whether or not they should be able to sell them. It is a question of doing it responsibly and in excellent conditions for both the animals and consumers.
Do you consider your pet a member of your family?
Of course. From the first day.
Do you include your pets in family photos?
If (s)he lets us.
Would you like to have more than one pet at home?
I always have that idea in my head, and if I had enough space and time, I would.
Do you think there are enough dog parks, and are they in good condition?
No. There's a long way to go at all levels. It is indeed a pending issue for local councils, which does not align with the increase in the dog population.
Do you travel with your pet, or do you leave her with friends, family, or in a kennel?
If we are going somewhere pet-friendly, we always try to take them with us. We do the research ahead of time. It is a deciding factor when we choose hotels, places to visit or transport. As I already said, she's just one of the family.
