The leading event in the pet industry, taking place at IFEMA MADRID from February 26 to 28, will showcase one of its major innovations by highlighting the significance of this industry in Portugal.

Iberzoo Propet, the internationally recognised fair in the pet industry organised by IFEMA MADRID and promoted by AMVAC - the Madrid Association of Veterinarians for Companion Animals - and AEDPAC - the Spanish Association of the Companion Animal Industry and Trade, will feature Portugal as the guest country for its upcoming edition scheduled for 26 to 28 February next year.

Portugal's presence at Iberzoo Propet is significant, as more and more people are welcoming pets into their homes in Portugal. According to the TGM Research Study 2023, 72% of Portuguese people have at least one pet, with dogs and cats being the most common (61% and 54%, respectively). This growth in pet ownership is reflected in the market, where over 4 million pets were registered in Portugal in 2024, meaning that the country is now a leading consumer of pet-related products and services in Europe.

Regarding the profile of these pet lovers, the sector is particularly strong among younger generations. Data reveal that 78% of Portuguese pet owners are aged between 25 and 34 years, followed by 66% in the 35 to 44 age range and 65% aged 18 to 24. This fascination from newer generations not only drives the market but also increases the demand for specialised products and services.

Sales channels in Portugal

Furthermore, pet ownership requires stores to offer services to meet the demand. Supermarkets are the primary channel for purchasing pet food in Portugal, accounting for 65.6% of all sales. This is followed by pet shops, which make up 21%, and the online channel, which has reached 17.2%, solidifying the digital trend in the sector. This growth in online commerce also opens new opportunities for companies specialised in pet products

Animal welfare, another incentive

Regarding animal health and welfare, veterinarians are the most frequently used service, with 78.6% of pet owners taking their pets for regular health checks.

Additionally, 63% of pet owners turn to their veterinarian for information about animal health, while 48% consult the Internet for answers. Other services, such as grooming and training, are also increasingly valued, although they represent a smaller percentage of the market, at 5% and 2%, respectively.
