DP World is transforming perishable logistics for a sustainable future, explains Dirk Hoffmann, DP World, Director, Product Development, UK Ports and Terminals.

As someone deeply committed to improving supply chains, I recognize the critical importance of efficient logistics, especially in the perishables sector. Recent disruptions in the global supply chain have increased uncertainty and reliability issues in the delivery of goods. In this sector, where 40% of cultivated food is wasted, reliable supply chains are crucial to reduce costs and eliminate waste.

At DP World, we collaborate with our customers to create fast, reliable and scalable supply chain solutions, ensuring that perishable products reach consumers in perfect condition. As we prepare for Fruit Attraction 2024, I am pleased to share how our strategic approach to cold chain logistics is giving more communities access to vital products, such as fresh fruit, in a sustainable way.

Cold chain logistics to -15°C

The Move to -15°C initiative is a collective industry-wide effort to improve sustainability and efficiency throughout the cold chain. Traditional cold chain logistics operate at -18°C, a standard established more than a century ago. However, technological advances have given us the opportunity to explore a shift to -15°C.

Ensuring freshness and reliability of perishable products

Perishable products require precise logistics to maintain freshness from farm to table. Our global network offers short transit times, modern equipment and strong communication channels to meet the demands of this sector. Our multimodal options enable us to move perishable products quickly, minimizing any risk to their shelf life.

The multibillion-pound avocado sector is an excellent example of modern supply chains at their best. At DP World Caucedo, avocados are big business. With strong demand in the U.S., Europe and Asia, optimizing the avocado supply chain is critical. We use AI and advanced analytics to monitor conditions and ensure timely and optimal delivery, while maintaining quality and reducing waste.

Building resilient communities through logistics

Building resilient communities through sustainable logistics is central to what we do. Our latest projects include the electrification of port machinery and the adoption of low-carbon solutions, such as the use of hydrogenated vegetable oil instead of diesel at our Southampton terminal. These actions help reduce carbon emissions and improve our operational sustainability and productivity.

Decarbonization is also an essential part of our sustainability strategy. We recognize the urgency of addressing climate change, especially in the perishables sector. In the UK, for example, the Cold Chain Federation has been instrumental in promoting policy measures to drive sustainable development. We support these efforts by implementing new energy benchmarks for cold stores and using tools to compare energy use, ensuring that our facilities operate at maximum efficiency.

Through collaboration and continuous innovation, we ensure a future in which fresh, high-quality produce is available to all, while protecting the environment. Our work with Dubai Municipality to develop the largest logistics hub for the food, fruit and vegetable trade demonstrates our commitment to supporting the sector at all levels.

As we continue to evolve and lead the industry, we look forward to collaborating with all stakeholders at Fruit Attraction 2024 -booth 4B17_to share ideas and drive new advances in perishable logistics, visit our booth for more information!
