Spain, Greece and Portugal among the most important markets for LGBT+ tourism
Spain, Greece, Portugal, the city of Buenos Aires, Miami and Tel Aviv are currently the most important markets for LGBT+ tourism, according to Juan Martín Boll, director of the consultancy firm JN Global Project, IFEMA MADRID's partner in organising FITUR LGBT+ 2023.
How important is LGBT+ tourism today?
Today LGBT+ tourism is more important than it was a few years ago, because of the promotion of diversity and the importance it has, especially in the new generation, Generation Z and the trans community. Added to this are the new family models, which make diversity within this segment even more diverse in terms of demand for tourism offers.
What figures support these arguments?
LGBT+ tourism is growing at a rate of 10.5% annually, accounts for 10% of tourists globally and is responsible for approximately 16% of total travel expenditure. This represents €200 billion per year in spending, and the forecast is for approximately €600 billion by 2030.
Spain is undoubtedly the top country. In the short term, different international events are planned, such as the Gay Games in Valencia and the IGLTA International Conference in the city of Seville in 2026. Torremolinos is a candidate to host Europride among other tourism events, such as the business and tourism congress Gnetwork Madrid, which has become an annual event for the sector. Also, Greece, Portugal, Buenos Aires, Miami and Tel Aviv are now very important markets for this segment.
