The heating sector in Spain showed signs of moderate recovery in 2024, recording turnover of €922 million euros, announced Raúl Serradilla, Acting President of FEGECA, at the presentation of the annual report, during which he also discussed the main challenges for the future. The sector faces the challenge of modernising an inefficient boiler fleet, which will require the renovation of around 270,000 households annually.

At the presentation of its latest report, Raúl Serradilla, Acting President of FEGECA, the Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Heat Generators and Emitters, recalled that "2023 was a particularly challenging year for heating and renewable energies in Spain, affected by inflation, economic uncertainty and misinformation around the future of gas boilers". However, he underlined that "2024 has shown signs of a moderate recovery, with turnover reaching 922 million euros".

The report also highlights the main challenges in the sector, such as "misinformation about gas boilers, which has created uncertainty among consumers and slowed down purchasing decisions". FEGECA stresses the need to provide clear information aligned with European regulations in order to boost confidence in these technologies. In addition, "the aerothermal market has experienced a slowdown due to the normalisation of energy prices, the lack of effective incentives and the structural limitations of housing in Spain".

As for incentive programmes and subsidies, FEGECA's analysis concludes that their impact has been lower than expected. "Factors such as rising energy prices have lengthened payback periods, reducing the return on investment for consumers". To revive the market, the association proposes to increase aid, speed up the granting of subsidies and facilitate access to low-interest loans.

FEGECA is committed to a balanced approach to decarbonisation, based on hybrid solutions and the use of renewable gases such as biogas, biomethane and hydrogen. "Spain has great potential for biomethane production, a viable alternative that can be integrated into the existing infrastructure with no need to replace equipment, representing an economically efficient option with less impact on consumers".

Modernising the boiler fleet

The heating sector faces the challenge of modernising an inefficient boiler fleet, which is essential to meet the EU's climate targets. "To achieve this, it is estimated that around 270,000 homes will need to be renovated annually. This challenge is compounded by the shortfall in new housing construction, which has a direct impact on the market".

With this report, FEGECA reaffirms its commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability, committing to a balanced energy transition that combines various technological solutions adapted to the needs of the Spanish market. The document also includes a detailed analysis of the sales figures of the different segments of the heating sector represented in the Association.

Raúl Serradilla also discussed the current challenges posed by the economic situation and the increasing decision-making power of the consumer. Despite this context, he insisted manufacturers remain optimistic about the future. He stressed the need to work closely with the public administration, to promote renewable energies and to adapt to market demands. He expressed confidence that, thanks to the joint efforts of the sector, new opportunities and a promising horizon will emerge.
